As you can see, you have enormous flexibility in determining how long a change in a dynamically configurable parameter s value will persist. his case study shows how a distributed system might use a messaging service to implement a workflow system in an event-based manner. The system is a hypothetical order system for a car manufacturer I ll call ASAP Cars, which builds vehicles Just In Time (JIT). Instead of using forecasts to determine which models of cars to build, ASAP Cars builds a JIT car when an order is received. In a true JIT manufacturing system, all the main subassemblies reach the manufacturing floor just in time, arriving at the assembly line exactly when they are needed. The JIT approach allows the manufacturer to dispense with large warehouses containing inventories of parts or subassemblies, cutting costs dramatically. JIT manufacturers no longer need huge parking lots to hold cars waiting to be sold. On the other hand, the planning logistics to keep a JIT manufacturing system flowing smoothly are daunting, requiring the coordination of every step in the process. A distributed information system guides the workflow of all the processes. What is most interesting about this case study is not the business logic implemented by the server components, but how those components are connected together and how they communicate using event notifications, channeled through a centralized messaging service. To actually run the code, you ll need to have Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) running somewhere in your environment. For instructions on setting up MSMQ, see the Testing the Complete System section at the end of the chapter.

RMAN, Oracle s backup and recovery tool, will back up the server parameter file automatically when you back up your database. If you wish to modify several parameters in the SPFILE, the easiest way to do so is to first create an init.ora file from the SPFILE (as discussed in the previous section), make changes in the init.ora file, and create a new SPFILE from it. This process will, however, involve restarting the database.

Always create an SPFILE soon after you create the initial database. You ll be making a lot of initialization parameter changes on a new database, and the SPFILE gives you the chance to make these changes permanent if you so wish. This eliminates a lot of confusion later on, when you re making changes to several initialization parameters at once.

You can re-create the SPFILE or the PFILE from the current values of the initialization parameters that an instance is currently using. The following command will create an SPFILE from the current values in use: SQL> CREATE spfile FROM MEMORY; The command creates a new SPFILE in the default location, but you can specify an alternative location. You can similarly create a regular initialization parameter file, as shown in this example: SQL> CREATE pfile FROM MEMORY; This command will come in handy when you lose the current parameter file. In a RAC environment, the command will capture the parameter settings being used by each of the instances in the system.

ASAP Cars needs a system that connects to each of its business and operations centers to manage incoming orders and produce tailor-made cars. To keep this case study straightforward, I ll abstract away many of the low-level details of car manufacturing, concentrating instead on the coordination of the higher-level workflow that runs the system. ASAP Cars simplified business model uses the following steps: 1. Accept an incoming order. 2. Create a work order. 3. Schedule JIT delivery of all parts. 4. Assembly vehicle. 5. Generate customer invoice.

You can start up and shut down your Oracle database from the SQL*Plus interface, the OEM interface, and an RMAN interface. I ll focus on performing these operations using the SQL*Plus interface in this chapter.
