Once you configure your initialization file, you are ready to create the instance. Make sure you save the initnina.ora file in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory, which is the default location for an init.ora file or an SPFILE on UNIX/Linux systems (on a Windows system, the default location is $ORACLE_HOME\database). This way, Oracle will always find it without you having to specify the complete path of the location.

To create the database, first you must have the instance up and running. Remember, an instance can exist without any database attached to it, and the active instance makes it possible for you to create the database. Follow these steps: 1. Make sure you have specified the correct ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME locations, as explained earlier in the Setting OS Variables section in this chapter. 2.
